About Ben

Clinical Psychology Registrar – Psychologist | Bangalow

Ben helps people explore their experiences in the context of their emotions, thoughts and behaviours.  This exploration leads to a greater understanding of current concerns, clarity as to how a person came to be this way, and it drives the goals that people define in working towards a more satisfying existence.

Supporting people as they work through their painful or traumatic life experiences,  Ben explores significant relationships, identity issues and long-held beliefs and coping strategies.

His clients gain greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, tolerance and capacity for navigating through life’s many challenges. Many are able to lay down destructive behaviours and begin to create more of the lives they wish for, with the therapeutic process allowing people to move from surviving to growing and thriving.

Ben helps people from all walks of life achieve sustainable and long-lasting change. People of different age, race and cultural heritage, indigenous people and sexually/gender diverse people are welcome in Ben’s practice and are treated for a range of mental health and behavioural concerns.  These include anxiety concerns, specifically; social anxiety, generalised anxiety, panic attacks, OCD, phobias; PTSD, relational trauma, Complex Trauma, sub acute schizophrenia and psychosis, depression, and addiction of all types, particularly alcohol and drug addiction.

Ben has a passion for combining evidence-based treatments with dynamic therapeutic approaches, underpinning these with grounding and mindfulness activities that connect people back with the wisdom of their bodies, so they are no longer overrun and exhausted by their minds.

Attachment theory resides at the core of his treatment philosophy, and the evidence-based treatments of Schema Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Interpersonal Therapy, Sensory Grounding, Distress Tolerance, Exposure Therapy and Motivational Interviewing are employed where appropriate.

Ben’s long-held interest in the structure of the personality finds its expression in the use of Schema Therapy and Voice Dialogue as a means of allowing people to more fully understand their personality and develop a more solid sense of self/identity.  Finally, sensory grounding, breath work and meditation are strongly encouraged, and guidance is provided on increasing nervous system regulation and connection with the day to day experience.

Ben holds a Bachelor of Engineering, Graduate Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma in Psychology and a Masters of Clinical Psychology. He is a member of the Australian Psychological Society and is registered as a Clinical Psychology Registrar with AHPRA (PSY0002485700)

Ben grew up on a cattle farm in Northern NSW and lived abroad for many years, working as a Project and Change Manager in the corporate environment. He has navigated complex change and overcome significant challenges in his own life and now feels privileged to be helping others find their own path of growth and change.
